3-Player Pickleball: Solo Half-Court Rep Machine

Summary

Ty Butson’s fix when you don’t have a fourth: play a full game with three. The solo player owns one side of the court the whole time — serve from that half and stay there even on returns. The two opposite can only hit into that half.

Same rules and scoring (play to 11). The solo player gets almost every ball, so they rack up reps across the whole court. Rotate who is “the one” every 7 or 11 points so everyone gets the high-volume side.

Key takeaways

  • Solo side owns one half for the whole game; pair can only hit into that half
  • Normal scoring — play to 11 (or rotate at 7)
  • Whoever is “the one” gets the bulk of the reps — rotate all three

Action items

  • Next short-handed session: play one game to 11 with each player as the solo once
  • As the solo, track how many kitchen points you actually finish — volume is the point
