Transition Zone Drill 5 Resets

All Things Pickleball’s favorite drill for the transition zone — the area that “separates good players from great ones.” Setup: line up about three steps in from the baseline (where most people make mistakes). Partner feeds from the opposite kitchen. You must hit five successful resets and cannot move forward to the kitchen until those five are done. After the gate, go to the kitchen and play the point out; first to seven wins.

The coaching problem it solves is rushing through the transition without proving you can neutralize pace. Getting to the NVZ is the goal, but how you get there matters — this drill forces soft hands and patience before the reward of advancing. Send it to partners as a ready-made practice plan.

Key takeaways:

  • Start ~3 steps inside the baseline (error zone)
  • Partner feeds from opposite kitchen
  • 5 successful resets required before any advance
  • Then finish at kitchen and play out (first to 7)
  • Patience in transition is the skill being trained

Action items:

  • Mark the starting spot with a cone (~3 steps inside baseline)
  • Require 5 clean resets before anyone is allowed to take a step forward
  • Define “successful reset”: lands in kitchen, below net height, no popup — agree before starting
  • Play first-to-7 after the gate; switch roles every game
  • Partner veto on early advances — replay from five again
  • Film: count illegal early steps under pressure
  • Next session: raise difficulty (faster feeds) but keep the 5-reset gate
  • Weekly habit: one 15-minute block of this drill before open play
