Two doubles partners waiting at the kitchen line, seen low through the net

How to Make the Half-Volley a Weapon in Your Pickleball Game

Collin Johns (Pickleball 360) reframes the half-volley as a midcourt weapon, not a panic bailout. Once reliable, it keeps you consistent through the transition zone and buys the time you need to close to the kitchen — often setting up a more aggressive next ball. Search half-volleys out: keep stroke mechanics simple, catch the ball at the right phase of the bounce, and even manufacture them by pivoting forward onto a bounce near your feet or (counterintuitively) pivoting back when the bounce is behind you.

Action items

  • Drill intentional half-volleys from midcourt before escalating to drives
  • When the bounce is on your feet, pivot into it instead of backing up and swinging big
  • Treat a solid half-volley as the bridge that lets you crash to the kitchen
